Avoiding Long Term Complications Of Diabetes |
|
|
| |
|
People with diabetes may get problems such as heart attacks, strokes, bad circulation, and problems with the eyes, kidneys and nerves. The good news is that the risks of these things happening can be reduced.
The things that you can do to reduce the risks are:
Stop smoking
Keep blood sugar control good
Stay fit and active
These things are important for avoiding all the complications of diabetes. You need to be seen regularly in clinic so that we can:
Help you keep your blood sugar control good
Monitor and treat other risk factors such as blood pressure and cholesterol
Check to see whether complications have started to develop
Treat complications wherever possible
Prevention is better than cure, but if complications do arise it is important that we find them early so that they can be treated if possible. It is important that everyone with diabetes has a thorough check-up at least once a year. This "annual review" examination is explained in the Diabetes UK web-site that also has a very clear explanation of what care you should expect as someone with diabetes. The annual review can be done at your GP surgery or hospital clinic. If you are not getting the care you need, please discuss your needs with your diabetes doctor or specialist nurse.
