Women With Diabetes

Mother And Baby   Planning a Pregnancy and Diabetes

Why should I plan my pregnancy?
Research shows poor diabetes control can increase the risk of birth defects. Women with diabetes have a 4 in 100 chance of having a baby with birth defects compared to 2 in 100 in women without diabetes.

Can planning help?
Good blood glucose control prior to and during pregnancy can minimise the risks and help achieve successful outcomes.

What should you try and do?
If possible try and have good diabetes control (HbA1C 6.1% DCCT/43mmol/mol IFCC or less) for at least 3 months prior to becoming pregnant. Taking extra folic acid for at least 3 months prior to pregnancy also helps reduce the risk: We suggest a dose of 5 mg per day, which is more than the dose recommended for other women. You need to get a prescription from your doctor for this.

What other things can you do?
When you are thinking of becoming pregnant there are several other things you need to do:-

  • Ensure you have had a diabetes annual review. You may also need your diabetes treatment adjusting. Sometimes if you are on tablets for your diabetes these may need changing to insulin. This may be needed to help you achieve the best diabetes control or because some tablets should not be taken while you are pregnant.
  • Check you are immune to rubella
  • If you are on any other medication e.g. for blood pressure these may need to be reviewed and changed. Some tablets are not safe to take whilst pregnant.
  • If you smoke you should stop smoking prior to becoming pregnant. There is support available for you to do this.
  • Stop drinking alcohol or drink as little as possible.
  • Review your weight. If you are struggling with your weight seek help. There are services available to support you.

You would like more help or want more information?
There are pre pregnancy clinic appointments available at both City and QMC Hospital Campus. If you would like to make an appointment, please contact your diabetes team as soon as you are thinking about becoming pregnant.

You are not planning a pregnancy yet?
If you are not planning a pregnancy at the moment or if you are but your diabetes is not well controlled, it is important to use some form of contraception.
