We aim to provide comprehensive care for all people over 16 years old with diabetes who have been referred to us. The following pages contain information about the diabetes service, which we hope you will find helpful. If you would like to use our services but are not under the care of one of the diabetes consultants, please speak to your GP who may be able to refer you. People with Type 1 diabetes are usually seen in hospital clinics. People with Type 2 diabetes are usually treated and monitored by their GPs but may need to be referred to hospital clinics if particular problems arise. |

Outpatient appointments and medical check-ups with your diabetes specialist are usually held in clinic 2, B floor South Block. Clinic 2 is easy to find from the main entrance: just go straight ahead following signs to South Block and clinic 2 is on the right.
The Diabetes Unit is on C floor, South Block of the hospital. If you use the main entrance you need to follow the signs to South Block from the main entrance, then go up one floor to C floor. If you come in the South Block entrance, you simply need to go up two floors to C floor and follow signs from the lifts.

Everybody should have an annual review at least once a year. If you have been sent an appointment that you cannot attend, please contact the Diabetes Register (0115 9709209) to change it so appointment slots are not wasted. Unfortunately, all our clinics are very full so it can be difficult to book you in at short notice.

Young People with Diabetes
These are run for young patients on insulin. They are where most young people with diabetes (aged 16 to 25) now have their medical checks. Doctors and Diabetes Specialist Nurses are both available during the clinic.

Foot Clinic
A weekly clinic is held for patients with foot problems (clinic 2 Wednesday mornings). Urgent problems should be discussed with the Diabetes Unit (0115 9709215) during the week and ward C54 (0115 9709213) during evenings and weekends.

Nephropathy (Kidney) Clinic
This clinic is run for people who have kidney problems caused by diabetes (nephropathy). Dr Page runs a clinic on the first Thursday of each month in clinic 2.

Antenatal Clinic
Dr Gazis and Dr Mansell run this clinic jointly with the obstetricians (doctors who specialise in pregnancy) for women with diabetes who are pregnant so that obstetric and diabetic check-ups can be done at the same time. (Wednesday mornings, antenatal clinic)

Diabetes Specialist Nurse-led Drop in service
Every weekday afternoon (except bank holidays) between 2 and 3.30 PM, a nurse and a doctor will be available in the Diabetes Unit to help you with urgent diabetes-related problems. If you know in the morning that you are going to need to come, it would be helpful if you could telephone and let us know (0115 9709215).

Individual Appointments
Appointments with the Diabetes Nurse Specialists or Dietitians can be made by contacting the Unit Secretary (0115 9709215).

Monitoring Equipment
A wide selection of blood glucose monitoring equipment is available for demonstration in the unit.

Education
Advice leaflets on many aspects of diabetes are available for short-term loan. A full range of educational programmes is available for patients on diet, tablets or insulin. Please ask for details.

6. |
Pregnancy and Diabetes
Diabetic control is very important before and during pregnancy: getting pregnant when your control of diabetes is poor can be dangerous for your baby's health. Any woman considering pregnancy should contact the Diabetes Unit (970 9215). We provide a joint diabetes/antenatal service with the maternity department and offer pre-pregnancy advice sessions on an individual basis. Folic acid supplements should be taken before every pregnancy if possible. It is also important to stop smoking if you are planning a pregnancy.

Research
Research is of course very important to help us understand more about diabetes and to improve treatments. There are always a variety of research projects in progress in the Diabetes Unit. If you would like to take part in a project, please let us know and we will find out if a suitable project for you is underway.

Dietitians
Jennifer Calvert and Fumi Fukuda are dietitians who specialise in diabetes and are based in the diabetes unit. Most patients need advice about diet when diabetes is first diagnosed and many need ongoing advice and help. Diet is of course absolutely crucial in diabetes and we believe in giving people individualised advice about changes that they can make to their own diet rather than simply giving out leaflets. The doctors in clinic will refer you to the dietitian if necessary.

Specialist Registrars
There are 4 specialist registrars. These are doctors who have been qualified for at least 3 years and who have chosen to specialise in diabetes. They are at various stages through a 5-year program during which they work and train at the same time. Because it is important for doctors to have a broad base of medical experience, the doctors work at several different hospitals during their training. This means that most of the registrars work with us for 2 years or less.

The Diabetes Unit telephone number is 0115 9709215. Out of hours and when all the staff are busy an answer phone is left on. If you leave a message you will be called back as soon as possible. If you have an urgent problem out of hours, you can call ward C54 for advice (0115 9709213), call your own GP. |
